When Is It Time for an Oil Change?
Part of conducting regular maintenance on your car is checking and replacing the oil. If you neglect this aspect, you run the risk of damaging your engine, which can end up costing you thousands of dollars in repairs down the road. While you should typically have your oil changed every couple thousand miles, you should always keep an eye out in case the unexpected happens.
Signs Your Car Needs an Oil Change
The following signs can be early indicators that your oil needs changing.
The engine or oil light is on
One of the most obvious signs that you need an oil change is when your oil light pops up on your dashboard. You should check the dipstick to see if the oil is at its appropriate level and if it’s the right color, which brings us to the next point.
The oil is dark or dirty looking
Clean, fresh oil has an amber look to it. As the oil is used in the engine, it collects particles from the engine, which can cause it to grow darker. Check your engine oil via the dipstick at least once a month to ensure the color is right.
Smoke comes out of the tailpipe
It’s normal for your car to have translucent vapor coming out of the exhaust pipe. However, once you notice smoke coming out, it’s possible that you have an oil leak, so you should go in for service right away.
You hear engine noise or “knocking”
One of the purposes of your car’s oil is to provide lubrication between engine parts. Lack of oil can cause engine noise to increase because parts are brushing and knocking together. Many modern cars have a knock sensor to alert you of any issues, but you should keep an ear out for unusual sounds, anyway.
There is an unusual smell in the car
An oil leak can lead to a strange odor in the car. You should also be wary of the smell of gas or exhaust fumes. All of these can be indicators of oil problems, or possibly something much worse.
